Controversial Tom Cruise biography kept off NZ shelves

* Tom Cruise’s lawyer attacks unauthorised biography

Tom Cruise an Unauthorised Biography will not be distributed in New Zealand by the publisher MacMillan.

The biography by Andrew Morton, author of a top selling book on Princess Diana, is understood to contain controversial assertions about the Church of Scientology.

MacMillan publicist Angie Willocks said the book would not be distributed in New Zealand but that the company would make no further comment.

The star’s lawyer Bert Fields has previously condemned the book as “a rehash of tired old lies about Tom and his religion, some new grotesque lies”.

“Clearly the book is actionable, but I’m not commenting on anything to do with legal issues,” Mr Fields said.

Andrew Howard of Dymocks New Zealand said the book never made it into the country and Dymocks had decided not to try and source it straight from the US.

“The US has different legislation than New Zealand and Australia. There are some issues with the book having legal questions asked and we would need those tidied up before we stock it,” Mr Howard said.

He said it could be a matter of altering a few lines but was likely to be more.

Mr Howard said Dymocks had not anticipated the book selling well but that publicity over legal issues could boost sales.

“It’s good marketing spin from somebody and it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen this sort of tactic used. It doesn’t mean the book is any good,” Mr Howard said.

The Auckland branch of the Church of Scientology has not heard of any legal threats made by the church against the book.

Tom Cruise book labelled ?sick stuff?

January 10, 2008 by admin

A lawyer for Tom Cruise has attacked an unauthorised biography of the star, calling it “outrageous, sick stuff,” even as US publisher St Martin’s Press defended the book.

Tom Cruise, An Unauthorized Biography, by British author Andrew Morton, best known for his top-selling 1992 book on Princess Diana, is due on US bookshelves this month.

“He [Morton] has made a number of claims that are false and demonstrably so,” said Fields, who added that he had read Morton’s book,

“Clearly the book is actionable, but I’m not commenting on anything to do with legal issues,” he said.

The Church of Scientology in London did not reply to an e-mail asking for comment on the allegations.

In a brief statement, St Martin’s Press spokesman Steve Troha said: “We stand by our book and our author.”

Fields said Cruise has no plans to read the book, and the lawyer also slammed Morton’s claims that Cruise’s former wife, Australian actress Nicole Kidman, was worried she would be blackmailed or not see the couple’s two adopted children if she spoke out against the Church of Scientology after their divorce.

Kidman’s spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment, but Fields said Morton’s claims were “absolute hogwash … what they say about her is absolutely false.”

“The man should be ashamed of himself and so should his publisher,” said Fields. “He pretends to be writing a biography without ever talking to anybody who has really known Tom for the past 30 years,” said the spokesman. (Source: TVNZ)

Man avoids jail over Tom Cruise extortion plot

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A computer technician who admitted attempting to extort 1.3 million dollars from Tom Cruise in exchange for stolen photos of the actor’s wedding escaped with a fine and probation on Thursday.

Marc Gittleman, 34, had pleaded guilty in Los Angeles in September to transporting stolen property after it emerged he had offered to return the photos of Cruise and wife Katie Holmes in exchange for cash, a court heard.

US District Judge George King fined Gittleman 3,000 dollars and gave him two years probation after lawyers on both sides agreed that a prison sentence or home detention was unnecessary.

Gittleman said in an address to the court he had “brought unimaginable shame upon myself and my family.” “I’ll be working the rest of my life to make it right,” he said.

Defense lawyer Richard Hirsch said Gittleman’s crime was “an impulsive act” that showed “colossal bad judgment.”

Cruise was not present at the hearing. (Source: Yahoo! News)

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Skip Katie?s Premiere Party

It was a mixed bag Wednesday night for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. They came to the red carpet for “Mad Money,” Holmes’ first film release since their marriage.

In the lobby of the Mann Westwood Village theater, Cruise graciously shook hands with yours truly and Holmes and I shared a reluctant hug.

But that was it. The couple left as the Callie Khouri-directed feature unspooled and they weren’t seen again.

Even though co-stars Diane Keaton, Ted Danson and Queen Latifah made it to the lavish Overture Pictures premiere party at UCLA Westwood’s Royce Hall, the Cruises were a decided no-show. Tom’s cousin, actor William Mapother, made it to both events but didn’t know what had happened to his hosts. (Source: FOX News)

Tom Cruise and the fabulous Katie Holmes can now add hero to their résumés. In Touch Weekly reports that in late December Tom was driving his Hummer near his home in Telluride, Colorado, with his wife, Katie, and his three children, Isabella 15, Connor, 13, and Suri, 21 months.

Hubby and wife saw a woman who was stranded when her vehicle ran off the road. An onlooker tells In Touch, “The police were waiting with the woman for a tow truck and all of a sudden, a Hummer pulled up and it was Tom Cruise!” He and his bodyguard helped push the woman’s car out of the snow.

The weekly entertainment magazine reports that the famous family had spent the holiday week frolicking in the snow. “We ski. We have big dinners and laugh,” Katie says. “We love cooking. Tom’s really good in the kitchen. He makes great pasta carbonara and lemon pasta.”

Is there anything he doesn’t do well? Tom regularly rescues damsels in distress on the big screen. Tom and Katie, 29, wished the woman a happy New Year as they drove away. (National Ledger, Jan. 9, 2008)

Katie Holmes On Her Romance With Tom: ?It Has Made My Life?

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (December 13, 2007) — Katie Holmes has opened up about her life with Tom Cruise in a new interview.

In the January issue of InStyle, Katie told the magazine she fell in love with the film superstar immediately.

“It happened in an instant,” she said. “I still get like that. ‘Whew.’ When you fall in love, it’s as though time stops. It’s all-encompassing.”

Since the couple’s fairytale like wedding in Odescalchi Castle in Lake Bracciano, Italy, last year, Katie said her relationship with Tom has only grown closer. The couple, despite their hectic filming schedules and round the world trips, stays in constant contact.

“Tom and I stay in really good communication with each other,” Katie said. “I talk to him about anything, at any time. He works 48 hours straight, comes home and if I ask, ‘would you help me with this?’ he’ll do it. He wants to. I try every day to make him know how much I love him. It’s get better and better. It has made my life.”

Tom also makes her day on a regular basis, often complimenting his wife on her choice of clothing.

“Tom likes me in a suit and a mini every now and then,” she said. “I like it when he likes it. It makes me blush. He’ll say, ‘You look good, I hope security’s going with you.’ Now that gives me attitude.”

Katie also enthused about her adorable daughter Suri, who is developing into one creative toddler.

“She loves coloring and creating. She’s a great mimic and dancer,” Katie said. “She came to a photo shoot yesterday and was into all the shoes. I’m mostly shocked at how quickly she grows.”

As for another little one for their brood, Katie said it’s an open door.

“I’d love to… but I’m in no particular rush. We’re enjoying our time right now,” she said. (Source: Access Hollywood)

‘Legend’ premiere has that Smith family vibe

By Donna Freydkin, USA TODAY

•On screen: Will Smith’s I Am Legend, opening Dec. 14, got a supersized premiere Tuesday night at a packed Madison Square Garden theater. In Legend, Smith is a scientist who survives a virus that wipes out New York City and is seeking a cure to reverse the plague. The film was shot on location. Son Jaden, 9, played Smith’s kid in last year’s The Pursuit of Happyness, and daughter Willow, 7, makes her film debut in Legend as his child.

•On the carpet: Smith talked about the film not yet being approved in China. “It’s too big a part of the world to not have a Will Smith movie.”

He and wife Jada Pinkett Smith celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary Dec. 31. To mark the occasion, “we said we’d give each other a high-five, say ‘Happy 10th’ and keep moving,” she said.

Close pal Tom Cruise showed up at the Garden. Said Smith: “That’s my man right there. I love the support.” He noted earlier that Cruise looked at the Legend script and gave him pages of notes. But Cruise clarified: “We work together on things. He doesn’t need any help.”

•From the mouths of babes: If she had New York all to herself, “I’d do everything I could,” Willow said. “I’d eat ice cream whenever I want and eat frosting with carrots.” (Source: USA Today)

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes take daughter to see Spice Girls in Las Vegas

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have taken daughter Suri to see the Spice Girls again.

The couple took the 19-month-old tot to watch the reunited girl group at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Hotel on Sunday night, just three days after seeing their Los Angeles show.

The Spice Girls - Victoria Beckham, Mel B, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and Mel C - said, “They can’t seem to get enough of us!”

Tom, Katie and Suri were joined in a private box by good friend David Beckham, husband of Posh Spice Victoria.

As well as seeing two of the concerts on their long-awaited world tour, two weeks ago the Cruise family watched the band rehearse.

Victoria said afterwards, “David and I are great friends with Tom and Katie. It was lovely of them to come down to rehearsals, a really nice surprise.”

Katie has told me before that she used to be a big Spice fan so it was great for her to meet the other girls.”

Although Tom, Katie and Suri were in the audience on Sunday night, many fans who had bought a ticket failed to show.

Many seats in the arena were left empty as they kicked-off the show.

An onlooker said, “It was quite embarrassing. Promoters had boasted of a sell-out tour and it doesn’t look good that they’re playing to half-empty arenas.”

Will was in Hollywood on Monday, forever cementing his handprints outside of the famed Grauman’s Chinese Theater.

Along with his handprints, which will now grace the sidewalk alongside some of Hollywood’s greatest legends, Will also carved the message “Change The World.”

“That kind of caught me off guard a little bit, so I’m honored,” Will told Access after the handprint ceremony. “It popped bigger in my mind when I got here than I had played it over the last couple of days, so I’m excited.”

And just as Will is lending his celebrity status to Obama, some of Will’s friends were on hand Monday to support their good friend.

Joining Will at the ceremony was pal Tom Cruise, along with Will’s youngest kids Willow and Jaden, as well as his “I Am Legend” co-star – Abbey the German Shepherd. His wife, Jada, was not present. (Source: Access Hollywood)

David Beckham, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes cause chaos at L.A. Spice Girls show

Lyndsey Parker Wed Dec 5, 9:00 PM ET

It was greatest-show-on-earth evening, featuring Roberto Cavalli-designed showgirl costumes; a pack of S&M leatherboys led on leashes; a candy-cane-striped poledance routine; a troupe of bullfighters; a cover of Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” by Melanie Brown; a catwalk march to RuPaul’s “Supermodel” by Victoria Beckham; a gymnastic performance of “It’s Raining Men” by Geri Halliwell; a medley of ’70s disco hits; and enough confetti to probably stuff all the pinatas in Mexico. But the Spice Girls’ December 5 Los Angeles concert was still nearly upstaged by a few superstar guests.

Shortly before the Spice Girls played their comeback concert at L.A.’s Staples Center (the third sold-out date on their reunion tour, following the December 2 kickoff in Vancouver, Canada and December 4 in San Jose, CA), commotion filled the stadium when Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, and their daughter Suri were sighted in a glass-walled private booth, sitting with David Beckham and the Beckhams’ sons.

Cruise stood on the balcony to wave to screaming fans and pose for photo opps, and the screams escalated to even more eardrum-splitting decibel levels when David Beckham emerged to purchase cotton candy from a passing vendor.

Other notable Spice-loving spectators in the audience included Perez Hilton (wearing a “Spice Up Your Life” T-shirt); fellow notorious “celwebrity” blogger Jeffree Star; and countless females (and some males) decked out in sequins, feather boas, platform boots, and Union Jack minidresses.

The Spice Girls’ reunion tour continues Friday, December 7, with a second night at the Staples Center. Check out the Spice Girls’ photo gallery for photos from their December 5 Los Angeles concert. (Source: Yahoo! News)
